The Difficult Dog Club is a community, a shop, and a resource for the people who love the dogs nobody else quite understands — the people who cross streets, cancel plans, restructure their lives, and would choose that dog again without a second thought.

The difficult dog didn't give you a harder life.
She gave you a different one.
About a month after I adopted Zeus, a neighbor sued me. I was scared. I didn't want to lose my dog. I'm a lawyer — so out of fear, out of love, and out of sheer necessity, I got to work. I dug into every legal resource I could find. The case was favorably resolved. Zeus stayed home. And I realized that nothing I needed had existed before that moment — so I created it. For you.
More than a shop.
A forever home.
This is what you're coming home to.
This is a private Circle community built for the people who know what this walk actually looks like. No judgment. No unsolicited training advice. No explaining yourself to people who have never loved a dog like yours. Monthly challenges to keep showing up, accountability partners to keep you company, and a member spotlight that says your dog's story deserves to be told. You've been doing this alone long enough.
You found your people. 🐾Kate is a Florida-barred attorney who has navigated a lawsuit, a dangerous dog designation, and every hard conversation that comes after a difficult incident. The DDC legal education resource is what she wishes had existed — a growing guide covering the legal realities of difficult dog ownership, with new chapters added monthly for the first year. Monthly topic-led sessions go deeper on what matters most. Monthly Q&A sessions let you bring your questions. All of it is general education, not legal advice — but it's the information that changes how you show up for your dog.
Know more. Fear less.Difficult dog ownership is as much an emotional experience as a practical one. The guilt and the love sitting side by side. The hard incident followed by the moment your dog looks at you like you're their whole world. Monthly group support sessions give you a space to process all of it — with Kate and with people who already understand. You don't have to translate here. You just have to show up.
Hard day. Good dog. Good people. You already know the trail less traveled. You found it because your dog needed somewhere quiet, and somewhere along the way it became the only trail worth walking. The DDC travel space in Circle is where members share what they've found — destinations, trails, dog-friendly places that actually work for dogs like ours. It's also where the DDC travel vertical gets built, with your experiences shaping what comes next. Founding members get first access when the travel vertical launches.
Built for the trail less traveled. 🌲Everything in the DDC shop is designed and made by Kate — for the walks that require preparation, the dogs that require explanation, and the owners who wouldn't have it any other way. Members get early access to select limited edition collections before they open to the public, plus a shop discount on everything. Because your dog deserves a bandana that matches their energy, and you deserve a break.
Treats. Spray. Optimism. The Side Eye. The Cheese Beggar. The Plotting. Over Threshold. The Good Day. The Expression Collection is a complete visual language for life with a difficult dog — 26 expressions released as 13 pairs, one pair per month over two years. Members receive each drop before the public. Because your dog's full emotional range deserves to be documented, celebrated, and turned into something you can put on your wall.
Every dog contains all of these. The DDC podcast is coming — conversations with difficult dog owners about the dogs that changed everything. The hard days, the breakthroughs, the moments that made it all worth it. Members get early access to new episodes before they go public. And founding members are invited to be among the first guests — the first voices in a conversation that's been a long time coming.
Coming soon. 🎙️One community.
Three ways to come home.
The Difficult Dog Club has three tiers of membership — Foster, Adopted, and Forever Home. Every tier gets you into the community. The full tier breakdown, benefits, and pricing are available when we open the doors. For now — get on the list.
You were here first.
That means something.
The Difficult Dog Club is being built right now — and founding members are the reason it gets built right. You're not joining something finished. You're joining something that will grow around you, shaped by your questions, your stories, and your dogs. In return, your founding member benefits are locked in forever. When the doors open to the public, prices go up and these extras go away. This is the only time this offer exists.

Meet Kate.
Kate Maxwell is an attorney, personal trainer, group fitness instructor, former online crisis counselor, and founder of The Difficult Dog Club. She is also a rock climber, canyoneer, mountaineer, hiker, and cave diver who has explored 22 states across multiple road trips with her dogs, because the trail is always better with a difficult dog beside you. She volunteers in dog rescue. It was inevitable.
She has shared her life with four extraordinary dogs — Gigi, Apollo, Zeus, and Athena. They took her down trails she never would have found, into a life she never would have thought possible, and toward every single thing she is most proud of. DDC exists because of all four of them.
Kate believes that when you set a goal, make a plan, and show up for it — especially when it's hard — you find out what you're actually capable of. She has watched that be true in a gym, on a mountain, in a crisis, and on a walk with a difficult dog. It's the same muscle. DDC exists to help you build it.
She created the DDC legal education resource because she needed it and it didn't exist. She designed the community because she couldn't find it anywhere else. She's writing the travel guides now — because 22 states and counting is a lot of trail to share.
She also made the bandanas. Oh, and she designed the fabric too.
The dogs who
started all of this.
Gigi
The first one. The chapter that began everything. The dog who started the conversation that became this brand. Always close. The connection continues.
Apollo
Bold, proud, irreplaceable. Still on every walk in spirit. The reason the Connection Wrap exists. The reason the memorial line exists. The first wrap was his.
Zeus • 9 years old • American Pit Bull Terrier
The primary architect of The Difficult Dog Club, LLC. Strong opinions about school buses, other dogs, and Tuesdays. He showed me the mountains. He found the quiet trails. He gave me the dawn. The whold brand is his fault.
Athena • 2 years old • Labrador Retriever
Rescued from neglect. Needed Zeus as much as he needed her. Still figuring out the world. Showing up for it every day. The newest member of the Founding Pack.
Easy dogs are for other people.
